Revelation 6:9 describes the opening of the fifth and sixth seals, with John witnessing the souls of martyrs who were slain for the word of God and their testimony. The apostle saw them under the altar, at the foot of the altar of incense, in the most holy place, at the foot of Christ. John was moved by the sight, as he saw the martyrs' souls still alive, and he believed that God had provided a better world for those who were faithful to death. Holy martyrs are very near to Christ in heaven, and their sacrifice gives them a reception into heaven and a place in heaven. The apostle's observation of the fifth seal was a sign of support and consolation for those who had been under great tribulation for the sake of Christ and the gospel. The apostle's observation was not a new prophecy but rather a reminder of the sacrifice of Christ for salvation.
