Hattie Ophelia Wyatt Caraway Of Arkansas Became The First Woman Elected To The United States Senate. Born On February 1, 1878, Near Bakerville, Tennessee, She Married Thaddeus Horatio Caraway In 1902. The Couple Moved To Arkansas, Where Thaddeus Pursued A Political Career, Serving In The U.S. House Of Representatives And Later In The Senate.

Following Thaddeus's Death On November 6, 1931, Arkansas Governor Harvey Parnell Appointed Hattie To Fill Her Husband's Vacant Senate Seat On November 13, 1931. Initially, She Was Expected To Serve As A Placeholder Until A Successor Was Elected. However, Hattie Chose To Run For The Seat Herself, Announcing Her Candidacy On May 9, 1932.

With Support From Louisiana Senator Huey Long, Known For His Populist Appeal, Hattie Campaigned Vigorously Across Arkansas. Long's Backing Was Instrumental In Her Securing The Democratic Primary Nomination. In The Subsequent General Election, She Achieved A Decisive Victory, Garnering Approximately 89.5% Of The Vote Against Republican Candidate John W. White.

Hattie Caraway's Election Was A Significant Milestone In American Politics, Breaking Gender Barriers In The Senate. She Was Not Only The First Woman Elected But Also The First To Preside Over The Senate And Chair A Committee. Her Tenure Lasted Until January 1945, During Which She Was Known For Her Dedication To Constituent Services And Support For New Deal Policies.

Despite Her Groundbreaking Role, Hattie Maintained A Low Profile, Often Stating, "I Haven't The Heart To Turn Him Down," Referring To Constituent Requests. Her Humility And Commitment Endeared Her To Many Arkansans. After An Unsuccessful Bid For Renomination In 1944, She Was Appointed To The Federal Employees Compensation Commission By President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

Hattie Caraway Passed Away On December 21, 1950, In Falls Church, Virginia. Her Legacy As A Trailblazer For Women In American Politics Endures, Inspiring Future Generations To Pursue Public Service.
