National Taiwan Museum 國立臺灣博物館

The museum is the oldest museum in the Republic of China (Taiwan). It was founded by the colonial government during Taiwan's period of Japanese rule. The museum is located in Zhongzheng District, Taipei.

Established in 1908, the museum is the oldest in Taiwan. The colonial government of Japan set up the Taiwan Governor Museum (臺灣總督府民政部殖產局附屬博物館, which officially opened on 24 October 1908, to commemorate the inauguration of the North-South Railway.

The museum had a collection of over 10,000 items in its initial stages. In 1915, the new building of the museum in Taihoku New Park was inaugurated and became one of the major public buildings during Japanese rule.

Since 1999, the museum has been administered by the Central Government and renamed "National Taiwan Museum." Throughout the years of war and political transition and after twice being renamed, it stands as the only museum established during the colonial years, which is still in operation on its original site.

The musuem is easy to get to and worth an hour or so of your time. If you have a family it’s a great stop and very affordable at 30 NTD to get in.

The 228 Peace Memorial Park 二二八和平紀念公園. The park contains memorials to victims of the February 28 Incident of 1947, including the 228 Memorial Monument that stands at the center of the park and the Taipei 228 Memorial Museum, housed at the site of a former radio station that operated under Japanese and Kuomintang rule. The National Taiwan Museum stands at the park's north entrance.

Rhia is a nice area in Taipei. Exploring the area on foot is a great way to see a bit if the history if Taiwan. The museum and park should be on your list if things to do if you are in this area.
