Unmasking Apocalyptic Bible Prophecies
Throughout history, the apocalyptic texts within the Bible have served as both a beacon of hope and a source of confusion for believers. From the Book of Daniel to the Revelation of John, these narratives have promised an eventual divine intervention, a time when the faithful would be vindicated, and evil would be vanquished. However, a critical examination reveals these stories not as divine prophecies but as fictions, woven by Hebrew authors grappling with the repeated silence of their god, YHWH. This article argues that these apocalyptic visions are not about foretelling the future but are instead desperate attempts to rationalize the repeated abandonment and suffering of YHWH's supposed chosen people.

The narrative of the Jewish people, later extended to Christians, is one marked by subjugation under numerous empires: Babylon, Persia, Greece, and Rome. Each period of oppression was met with expectations of divine retribution or liberation, yet these hopes were consistently met with silence. The First Temple was razed by the Babylonians, followed centuries later by the destruction of the Second Temple by the Romans. Where was YHWH during these times of crisis? The answer from history is clear: absent.

Apocalyptic texts like the Book of Daniel, written amidst the turmoil of the Maccabean Revolt around 165 BCE, and the Book of Revelation, which was composed more than a century later under the shadow of Roman dominion, are not windows into divine foresight but reflections of their authors' contemporary struggles and disillusionment:
...
The Book of Daniel is a prime example of reinterpreting past prophecy to fit current crises. Jeremiah had prophesied a 70-year exile in Babylon, but when this did not lead to the anticipated redemption, Daniel steps in, extending the narrative with new visions of beasts and divine judgments. This wasn't prophecy; it was an attempt to explain away YHWH's inaction by pushing the timeline of salvation further into an undefined future.
...
The Book of Revelation is even more fantastical and symbolic. This apocalypse paints a vivid picture of cosmic warfare where Rome, coded as Babylon, faces divine judgment. The author uses the myth of Nero's return as a metaphor for Rome's downfall, promising a future where the faithful would finally see justice. Yet, like Daniel before it, Revelation's prophecies failed to materialize, leading to centuries of reinterpretation, spiritualization, and delay of the so-called "end times."
...
The core message of these apocalyptic narratives is not divine promise but an illusion, a mirage of hope that has kept generations in a state of anticipation:
...
Each new crisis or generation is told that the end is near, yet this end never arrives. This constant deferment of salvation keeps believers in a state of passive hope, dedicating their lives to a faith that never needs to prove itself because its fulfillment is always just beyond the horizon.
...
In the context of modern [rapture theology] Christianity, this worldview promotes a kind of slave morality that emphasizes humility, meekness, and a turn towards otherworldly hopes rather than affirming life, and dealing with those many issues. Apocalyptic Christianity, in my analysis, inverts the noble values, making virtues out of necessity and weakness, thereby serving the interests of those who cannot cope with the harsh realities of life by asserting their will to power and creating the Kingdom of God on Earth that Jesus spoke of doing.
...
When these prophecies do not come to pass, the texts are always reinterpreted. The suffering is often seen as a test of faith or the timeline is extended indefinitely. This isn't divine mystery but a human strategy to reconcile belief with reality.
...
These narratives have been used throughout the ages cultural and psychological control. They are powerful tools that have been used for cultural cohesion, ensuring that even under the yoke of oppressors, faith in YHWH remains intact. By promising a future utopia, these texts subdue revolutionary impulses, redirecting desire for justice from earthly realms to heavenly realms.
...
If YHWH were indeed an active, intervening deity, why would His followers need such elaborate, mythical tales to explain His absence? The silence of God in history speaks volumes. These apocalyptic stories are fictions because they attempt to fill the void left by an unresponsive deity. They are not divine revelations but human constructs designed to make sense of a world where their [omnibeneficent] god has been conspicuously absent.
...
The apocalyptic literature in the Bible, when viewed through a critical lens, reveals itself not as prophecy but as fiction. These texts were born from the need to cope with divine abandonment, to excuse YHWH's repeated failures to act, and to keep a community bound by the promise of a redemption that never actually comes. For millennia, Jews and Christians alike have been led to dedicate their lives to a faith predicated on a future that never materializes, worshipping a deity whose existence is evidenced only by the silence of history. It's time to acknowledge these narratives for what they truly are: not the words of an omnipotent God, but the stories of people desperate to find an explanation their suffering.
