The long pole damaged the ceiling above the escalator.

I’m not sure why the man didn’t lower the pole before getting on the escalator. Maybe he was worried about accidentally hitting or injuring someone nearby. It’s also possible that he just didn’t think twice before stepping onto the escalator with it. I really hope no one was hurt in the process and that everything turned out okay.
