TODAY IN PHILOSOPHY OF HISTORY: Caesar Crosses the Rubicon

On 10 January 49 BC—2,073 years ago today—Caesar crossed the Rubicon with the 13th legion. This is one of the most notable dates in western history, symbolic on many levels, and for this reason generation after generation of school children have been asked to memorize the event as one in a catalog of names, dates, and places. Beyond this skeleton of historical fact, the event was pregnant with meaning that still resonates in the ongoing development of Western history.
