Soul icon Sam Moore who influenced Michael Jackson has died

Legendary soul singer Sam Moore, best known as one half of the iconic ’60s duo Sam & Dave, has passed away at age 89. Moore died in Coral Gables, Florida, on Friday morning due to complications from surgery, as confirmed by his publicist Jeremy Westby.

Born on October 12, 1935, in Miami, Moore began his musical journey singing in church. He rose to fame alongside Dave Prater, creating timeless hits like Soul Man, You Don’t Know Like I Know, When Something Is Wrong With My Baby, and I Thank You. The duo was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992, cementing their legacy in music history.

Moore’s influence extended far beyond his own performances, inspiring legends such as Michael Jackson and Bruce Springsteen. Even after Sam & Dave’s heyday in the 1960s, Soul Man enjoyed a resurgence in the late 1970s, thanks to the Blues Brothers' rendition featuring original session musicians.

A frequent performer at high-profile events, including the Kennedy Center Honors, Moore also sang for U.S. presidents, including Barack Obama. He is survived by his wife, Joyce, daughter Michell, and two grandchildren, leaving behind an indelible legacy in the world of soul and R&B music.
