Feb. 23, 1965 - A three-alarm fire of a “definitely suspicious nature” raged through a Black Muslim mosque in the heart of Harlem today. The fire came less than two days after Malcolm X was assassinated before a scheduled address in upper Manhattan. The mosque, which has entrances on both Lenox Ave. and 116th St., was the headquarters of Malcolm X when he was the New York leader of the Black Muslims.
Here, Chief Inspector Lawrence McKearney of the NYPD and two firefighters comment on the blaze.
