Feb. 12, 1965 - Beatle drummer Ringo Starr, 24, married his three-year “steady,” hairdresser Maureen Cox, 18, in a civil ceremony yesterday at London’s Caxton Register Hall. Ringo was married under his legal name of Richard Starkey.
It was so secret that the man who married them, Registrar Barry Digweed, didn’t even tell his two teenage daughters, who are ardent Beatle fans.
“Goodness knows what they’ll say to me,” he commented.
“I think it’s terrible,” moaned a typical fan, 16-year-old store clerk Ann Taylor. “It will affect his popularity.” But other fans took the loss bravely and said they still would buy Beatle records.
Ringo and Maureen slipped away in a limousine for a four-day honeymoon in the south coast resort town of Hove. Ringo must be ready to start work on the Beatles’ second movie on Monday.
George Harrison came to the wedding on a bicycle. John Lennon came in his Rolls-Royce. The other Beatle, Paul McCartney, is out of the country on vacation.
Lennon also is married and has a son. Harrison and McCartney are single.
