Feb. 8, 1965 - President Johnson said today that the United States will “answer any threat, pay any price” in order to preserve freedom in the world.
In remarks obviously aimed at North Vietnam, Red China, and the Soviet Union, Johnson warned against any “miscalculation” of American determination to back up South Vietnam in its war against the Communist Viet Cong.
Johnson made the remarks shortly after receiving a full-scale briefing from special Presidential assistant McGeorge Bundy on the widening crisis in Southeast Asia. Bundy also reported to a National Security Council meeting, the third one since Saturday.
