Biblical Audio Commentary – The Obedience of the Sons of Rechab

God commanded Jeremiah to conduct an interesting experiment as an object lesson. He told the prophet to gather up the tribe of an Israelite named Rechab and bring them to the house of the Lord. While there, Jeremiah was to set them at a table and offer them wine that they could drink to their hearts’ content. However, they balked at doing this. Although they were considered Rechabites, it was the son of Rechab named Jonadab, whom they considered their spiritual father. As such, Jonadab had ordered his descendants to remain free of worldly entanglements. He specified to them in Jeremiah 35:6-7 that . . .

‘You shall not drink wine, neither you nor your sons forever. You shall not build a house; you shall not sow seed; you shall not plant or have a vineyard; but you shall live in tents all your days, that you may live many days in the land where you sojourn.’
