Feb. 1, 1965 - President Johnson today made his first official appearance since recovering from a cold to award a fourth Distinguished Service Medal to Gen. Curtis LeMay, retiring Air Force Chief of Staff.
The ceremony, in the East Room of the White House, marked the end of 35 years of service for the general, the last of the major World War II senior commanders to serve on the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
