"Her power grows stronger by the day." Vertical has revealed the first official trailer for a new fantasy action adventure movie called In the Lost Lands, a collaboration between filmmaker Paul W.S. Anderson (yep he's still making more movies) and writer George R.R. Martin. A queen, desperate to find happiness in love, takes a daring step: she sends the powerful and feared witch Gray Alys to the "Lost Lands" to give her the magical gift of turning into a werewolf. She's joined by the mysterious hunter Boyce, fighting against dark creatures and merciless enemies, roaming an eerie and dangerous world. So it's climate change future but also has fantastical creatures galore? Starring Milla Jovovich as Gray Alys, Dave Bautista as Boyce, with Arly Jover, Amara Okereke, Fraser James, Simon Lööf, and Deirdre Mullins. This is set for a theatrical release this March but it doesn't seem like it will make much of a splash, despite it being another big, spectacular George R.R. Martin adventure story. This looks like such a wacky mashup of styles & ideas with excessive VFX shots - everything you'd expect from another W.S. Anderson movie. Enjoy? If you can...

Here's the first trailer (+ poster) for Paul W.S. Anderson's movie In the Lost Lands, direct from YouTube:

A new official trailer has been released for In the Lost Lands. The upcoming action-fantasy movie is about a sorceress who travels to the Lost Lands to find a magical power that will allow a human to transform into a werewolf. The film is based on a short story by Game of Thrones extraordinaire George R. R. Martin and is adapted by Paul W.S. Anderson and Constantin Werner. Anderson also directed In the Lost Lands, which is set to star Milla Jovovich, Dave Bautista, Arly Jover, and Fraser James.

Now, Vertical has released the trailer for In the Lost Lands. The trailer begins with Bautista's character dramatically saying "if you've got the time and the stomach for it, I've got a story for you." The character then explains the origin of the Lost Lands, a wasteland brought on by an apocalypse. Gray Alys (Jovovich) appears as a sorceress looking for a guide across the Lost Lands. As Gray and her guide travel across these lands, they experience tangible and fantastical barriers, including everything from fire to skeletal-like creatures.

What This Trailer Means For In The Lost Lands
In The Lost Lands Looks Very Different From Game Of Thrones

The In the Lost Lands trailer shows that this George R. R. Martin adaptation is far from Game of Thrones. While including fantasy elements, Game of Thrones and its prequel spinoff House of the Dragon have a medieval and historical aesthetic that makes them border on costume dramas. In the Lost Lands is the opposite, set in a futuristic, post-apocalypse where industry has played a big role in the world's destruction. This could be a jarring contrast to those who have accessed Martin's creative works primarily through Game of Thrones.

While several of Martin's books have been adapted for the screen, In the Lost Lands is the first to get a wide release. However, the journey to its release has not been easy, with the fantasy film experiencing many filming delays. However, Martin has been involved with the project, giving several updates on the movie's release, including its confirmed 2025 slate. Now with the first visuals, the movie will feature a monochromatic color scheme that features yellowish browns in the Mad Max-esque daytime settings, and blue-grey tones during darker sequences.

Our Take On The In The Lost Lands Trailer
In The Lost Lands Does Not Have An Ideal Release Date
In the Lost Lands Dave Bautista looking intensely at camera
While it is possible that the film could surprise us, In the Lost Lands looks to be one of the shakier Martin adaptations due to the theme and settings that are seemingly derivative of masterworks like Mad Max: Fury Road and Dune. This makes the movie look much less innovative than Game of Thrones. Its March 7 release date also does not instill much confidence in the movie. While last year saw a successful March release with Dune: Part Two, this period is not typically the blockbuster sweet spot. As In the Lost Lands releases, it will be interesting to see how it manages the box office.

George R.R. Martin: In the Lost Lands is “A Lot of Fun”
In the Lost Lands was first published in 1982 as part of the Amazon II anthology. In a blog post, Martin said the movie was “dark and twisted and atmospheric, and a lot of fun.” Martin wrote on his blog in November about the movie, saying, “A long time ago, I had hoped to write a series of stories about Gray Alys and those bold enough to buy from her…but life and other stories intervened, and somehow I never got around to writing that second tale. But who knows? If the film does well enough, maybe I will finally write that sequel. In my copious spare time.”

The film is directed by Paul W.S. Anderson (The Resident Evil franchise), who also wrote the screenplay for the film with Constantin Werner. The story was optioned several years ago from Martin by Werner, who also optioned two other short stories from the author including The Lonely Songs of Laren Dorr and Bitterblooms.

Bautista Will Star in the Upcoming Grendel Movie
Another upcoming project for Bautista is the new Grendel film, which is a live-action movie that tells the tale of Grendel, the monster at the center of the classic novel, Beowulf. Bautista is set to play Beowulf in the movie opposite Oscar-winner Jeff Bridges’ Grendel. Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad) will portray King Hrothgar. IMDb states that Grendel is currently in pre-production. Per Variety, the film began production in 2024 with Jim Henson’s Creature Shop heading up the practical creature work and design for the movie. The movie is written by Krzyowski, based on the 1971 novel, Grendel, by John Gardner.

Sam Elliott is set to voice The Dragon, Aidan Turner (The Hobbit Trilogy) will play Unferth and Tomasin McKenzie will portray Queen Wealhtheow. Grendel is being produced by Brian Henson and Vince Raisa for the Jim Henson Company alongside Robert D. Krzykowski, Jay Glazer, Dennis Berardi, and Jon D. Wagner. “Grendel represents everything I love about the movies. John Gardner’s mad masterpiece clearly tackles what it is to be human through the wide-eyed lens of a monster. It’s an honor to work with such a remarkable group of storytellers, all of whom seek to bring something wonderful and unexpected to audiences now,” Krzykowski said in a previous interview.

In the Lost Lands hits theaters on March 7.

Development
In February 2015, it was announced that Constantin Werner had purchased the rights to three George R. R. Martin short stories:[5] "The Lonely Songs of Laren Dorr", "In the Lost Lands", and "Bitterblooms". Werner planned to adapt all three stories into a single film with Milla Jovovich playing Gray Alys, and Justin Chatwin playing Boyce.

This version of the film never eventuated and the project entered limbo. In 2021, the film re-emerged with Paul W. S. Anderson as director, who previously collaborated with Jovovich on the Resident Evil film series, The Three Musketeers (2011), and Monster Hunter (2020). Dave Bautista replaced Chatwin as Boyce and Constantin Werner serving as co-writer and producer.[2][6] Werner stated:

I wrote the script in collaboration with British director Paul W. S. Anderson who put his unique vision on it, setting it in a dystopian future, a world in ruins, haunted by demons and monsters. Paul is directing it and we are both producing.[7]

According to Werner, the film was planned to begin filming in late 2021 or early 2022, but was delayed to late 2022.[8] George R. R. Martin's involvement added significant anticipation, given his fame from A Song of Ice and Fire.[9][10] In an August 2022 interview prior to filming, Anderson described the film as a 'western', saying:

At its heart, it's very much a western as it has all the iconography that one would associate with a western. It's set in a post-apocalyptic land, so on the surface it's not a western, but at its heart it is most definitely a western. It deals with a lot of western tropes and storytelling and imagery, so I am very excited to be doing that.[11]

Filming
Principal photography began 14 November 2022 at Alvernia Studios in Poland.[12][13] Photography wrapped in February 2023, after 46 days.[9]

Visual effects
The visual effects were provided by Herne Hill Media, which had previously worked on Anderson's Resident Evil film series and Monster Hunter.[14][15]

Post-production
In February 2023, George R. R. Martin indicated on Twitter that filming had concluded in Poland and was undergoing extensive post-production.[16]

Release
The release date for In the Lost Lands was initially set for September 26, 2024 in Germany, before being replaced on Constantin Film's slate by Megalopolis.[17]

In September 2024, Vertical acquired the U.S. distribution rights to the film.[18]

On November 19, 2024, George R. R. Martin revealed the film's February 28, 2025 US theatrical release date on his blog, calling the film "Dark and twisted and atmospheric, and a lot of fun."[19]
