"I told you to kill them." Mubi has debuted the full official trailer for Bring Them Down, an Irish thriller about rival families. This initially premiered at the TIFF & Fantastic Fest & London Film Festivals last year, now set for a US debut in February. An Irish shepherding family thrust into battle on several fronts: internal strife, hostility within the family, rivalry with another farmer. Paternalism, heritage, and the generational trauma cycle through the cultural prism of Ireland. TIFF adds: "Bring Them Down bristles with twists and tension, its gorgeous pastoral landscapes turning into sites of escalating violence. Yet the film never settles for simplistic hero/villain binaries. Instead, brilliantly shifts perspective, revealing the fears and aspirations driving all its characters — a strategy that succeeds in no small part due to Abbott and Keoghan, who share an incredible ability to reveal for the camera what their characters are hell-bent on hiding." Starring Barry Keoghan, Christopher Abbott, Colm Meaney, Nora-Jane Noone, Paul Ready, Aaron Heffernan, and Susan Lynch. This one actually looks quite good - a riveting thriller from Ireland that's worth a watch.

Here's the main official trailer for Chris Andrews' film Bring Them Down, direct from Mubi's YouTube:

Barry Keoghan battling Christopher Abbott in his native Irish countryside? No, this isn’t an expansion of Sabrina Carpenter’s “Please Please Please” music video: It’s “Bring Them Down,” writer/director Chris Andrews’ latest revenge drama that premiered at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival.

The official synopsis for “Bring Them Down” reads: “Michael (Abbott), the last son of a shepherding family, lives with his ailing father, Ray (Colm Meaney). However, the relationship between Abbott and Keoghan’s respective characters is a little more complex: Keoghan’s onscreen mother is Abbott’s ex, and therefore Keoghan is almost a surrogate son turned epitome of the life Abbott could have had. Prior to the two stars being cast, Tom Burke and Paul Mescal were originally set for the lead roles.

The film is co-written by Andrews and Jonathan Hourigan, with Julianne Forde, Jacob Swan Hyam, Ivana MacKinnon, Jean-Yves Roubin, Ruth Treacy, and Cassandre Warnauts producing.

The feature premiered at TIFF before screening at BFI. IndieWire’s Kate Erbland wrote in her review that the title has a double meaning, with Abbott’s Michael having to bring his sheep down from Keoghan’s family property but also referring to how their dual will escalate. “That’s long after everyone involved has decided to bring the other people down, no matter the cost, no matter the pain, no matter the misery,” Erbland wrote. “By the end, we’re all in the muck, all at rock bottom, praying for the tragedy and inhumanity to end. It won’t.”

Abbott will next appear in Blumhouse and Universal’s feature “Wolf Man,” as well as the Netflix adaptation of “East Of Eden” alongside Florence Pugh. Keoghan is believed to next be portraying Ringo Starr in Sam Mendes’ four-part Beatles biopic. Read Keoghan’s recent interview with IndieWire here.

“Bring Them Down” will premiere in theaters on Friday, February 7 from MUBI. Check out the trailer, an IndieWire exclusive, below.

The film stars Christopher Abbott, Barry Keoghan, and Colm Meaney. “Bring Them Down” is directed by Christopher Andrews, who co-wrote the screenplay alongside Jonathan Hourigan.

We were able to see “Bring Them Down” during its run at this year’s TIFF, and in our review, we said, “There is some good landscape photography in ‘Bring Them Down,’ as befits a film set in the Irish countryside. A couple of well-staged “action” moments also shine. Performances are well-judged as both Abbott and Keoghan are safe hands and intuitive performers. The American Abbott deserves extra credit for nailing his Irish accent and delivering much of his dialog in Irish.”

Early life
Keoghan was born on 18 October 1992,[a] and grew up in Summerhill, Dublin, Ireland.[5] His mother struggled with drug addiction and died when he was 12.[6] With his brother Eric, he spent seven years in foster care, in 13 foster homes, before being raised by their grandmother, aunt, and older sister Gemma.[7][6]

As a child, Keoghan appeared in school plays in the O'Connell School on Dublin's North Richmond Street but was banned for “messing about”.[8][9] He attributes his film education to sneaking into films with friends at Cineworld, Parnell Street, from which he was eventually barred.[8] After appearing in Between the Canals, Keoghan studied acting at The Factory (now Bow Street Academy), a local Dublin drama school.[5] He remembers “not even having €2.20 to get the bus to The Factory” at that time.[8]

Career
Keoghan began his acting career in 2011 when he answered a casting notice in a Sheriff Street shop window for the crime film Between the Canals. He portrayed Aido in a small role in the film, which was released in 2011.[8][5] At the age of 18, he appeared in the Irish soap opera Fair City.[9] In 2013 Keoghan appeared as Wayne on Love/Hate.[10][11] The role earned Keoghan recognition in Ireland, and he went on to feature in '71 in 2014 and Mammal and Trespass Against Us in 2016.[12][13]

Keoghan appeared in two films in 2017. He featured as George Mills in Dunkirk and starred as Martin Lang in The Killing of a Sacred Deer alongside Colin Farrell and Nicole Kidman.[14][9] He won the Irish Film and Television Award for Best Supporting Actor for his work in The Killing of a Sacred Deer.[15] The following year, he appeared in Black '47 as Hobson, an English soldier stationed in Ireland during the Great Famine.[9] He also starred in American Animals the same year. He portrayed Spencer Reinhart in the film, based on a real-life theft of rare books from a university library.[9]

He appeared in the 2019 mini-series Chernobyl.[11] He starred in an episode of Living With Lucy in September 2019.[16] That same month, his work in Calm With Horses was shown in the premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.[17] In July 2018, Keoghan was cast as lead character Yorick Brown in the pilot of Y: The Last Man. He left the main series production in February 2020.[10][18][19] Keoghan played Druig in the Marvel Cinematic Universe film Eternals in November 2021.[20] He appeared in The Green Knight.[21]

Keoghan at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival
Keoghan appeared in Matt Reeves's film The Batman (2022), credited as "Unseen Arkham Prisoner". Reeves later confirmed that Keoghan was the Joker.[22][23] On 24 March 2022, three weeks after the film's release, Warner Bros. released a deleted scene featuring Keoghan's Joker and Robert Pattinson's Batman.[24] Keoghan received an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor nomination, and won BAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for his performance in the 2022 film The Banshees of Inisherin, written and directed by Martin McDonagh.[25]

In 2023, Keoghan appeared in Emerald Fennell's psychological thriller Saltburn as Oliver Quick, the lead character, alongside Jacob Elordi, Rosamund Pike, Alison Oliver, Richard E. Grant, and Carey Mulligan. Keoghan received critical acclaim for his performance, and was nominated for the Golden Globe for Best Actor.

In 2024, Keoghan was cast as Ringo Starr in a series of four interconnected but separate biopics about the Beatles from filmmaker Sam Mendes. Starr himself confirmed the casting.[26]

In the media
In 2018 The Hollywood Reporter described Keoghan as "the next big thing" for his film work in the previous three years. In 2019 he was nominated for the BAFTA Rising Star Award.[9][27]

In March 2022, Keoghan was announced as the new ambassador for the Barretstown children's charity. He helped open the charity's new Aladina Studio funded by the Spanish Aladina Foundation.[4] In March 2024, British luxury fashion house Burberry named Keoghan as its brand ambassador.[28]

Personal life

From 2017 to 2020, Keoghan was in a relationship with Killarney native Shona Guerin, whom he had met on Good Friday in a Killarney pub where she was working.[35][36] The pair appeared on Livin' with Lucy together in 2019 in which Lucy Kennedy stayed with them in their Los Angeles home.[35] In September 2021, Keoghan began dating Alyson Kierans, a dental nurse and orthodontic therapist.[8][36] In March 2022, he disclosed that the couple were expecting a child together.[37] The birth of their son was announced in August 2022.[38] The family moved to Broughty Ferry, Dundee, Scotland, in November 2022.[39] Keoghan said in a 2024 interview that he and Kierans had split in mid-2023.[40] Since late 2023, Keoghan has been in an "on-and-off" relationship with American singer-songwriter Sabrina Carpenter.
