"I need you to realize the gravity of the situation." IFC Films has unveiled the official trailer for Armand, a Norwegian film marking the feature directorial debut of Norwegian filmmaker Halfdan Ullmann Tøndel - who is Ingmar Bergman's grandson. This initially premiered at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, and played at tons of other festivals throughout last year (teaser here). The film is set to hit US theaters in February just after the Oscar nominations (on January 17th) since it was submitted by Norway for this year. It "sheds light on a complex theme from constantly new perspectives, surprising & touching its audience with creative portrayals of the main characters’ emotional journeys." Elisabeth is summoned to a parent-teacher meeting on short notice. Her son is accused of something, but what that "something" is, remains unclear. Soon, the principal, nurse, and more parents join a meeting that quickly spirals out of control. The film stars Renate Reinsve, Ellen Dorrit Petersen, Thea Lambrechts Vaulen, Endre Hellestveit, Øystein Røger, & Vera Veljovic. Similar to Germany's The Teachers' Lounge. A very intriguing, distinct trailer - check it out.

When defamed actress Elisabeth (Renate Reinsve) is abruptly called into a parent-teacher meeting after hours, she's presented with scathing allegations that trigger a tangled web of accusations between parents and faculty. As Elisabeth struggles to uncover the truth amid the empty school rooms and dark corridors, a chaotic fight for redemption arises where desire, madness and obsession prevail. Armand is directed by Norwegian filmmaker Halfdan Ullmann Tøndel, the grandson of Liv Ullmann and Ingmar Bergman, now making his feature directorial debut after directing a few other short films previously. It's produced by Andrea Berentsen Ottmar. This first premiered at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival playing in the Un Certain Regard section. The film opened first in Norway back in September this year. IFC Films will debut Tøndel's Armand film in select US theaters starting February 7th, 2025 early next year. It already had a small awards run in NYC only starting November 29th, 2024 for just one week. Anyone still interested in this?
Award season is just starting to get into full swing, yet one of the films on the Oscars shortlist has yet to even reach theaters. That film would be Armand, the Norwegian international feature that stunned viewers at the Cannes Film Festival last year with Renate Reinsve as its star. Written and directed by Halfdan Ullmann Tøndel, it takes place during a parent-teacher conference in which Elisabeth, an actress whose young child has been accused of inflicting a heinous act upon his classmate, is called in to sort out a very messy situation with the faculty and the other parents. Ahead of the film's arrival on the big screen, a new trailer teases how this meeting devolves into something completely out of the ordinary that will drag everyone involved into an intense, convoluted argument over where boundaries begin and end.
The footage opens with Elisabeth's vehicle racing through trees to reach the dark, secluded campus of the private school all as a conversation plays out between the faculty members about the incident. Immediately, it sets a tone for how serious the situation is in Armand and how precarious it will be to handle a public figure. Even the music sounds more fitting for a horror movie as Elisabeth approaches and enters the room, beginning a meeting that only creates more questions about her, her son, and what Armand's actions actually mean. She's hard to get a read on as she bursts into fits of laughter and tears that could be the result of nerves or a deliberate act put on to manipulate the room. Everything is left ambiguous, with scenes of Elisabeth's panicked behavior juxtaposed against the judgmental staff trying to convey the gravity of the situation.
Armand marked the feature debut of Tøndel, who hails from film royalty as the grandson of legendary director Ingmar Bergman and Norwegian actress Liv Ullmann. With the tense classroom drama, he's kicking off his own career on a high note. The film earned him not just rave reviews and a 72% Rotten Tomatoes score, but the coveted Caméra d'Or at Cannes, which commemorates the fest's best first feature. Describing what makes his work special, Tøndel shared how each scene is dedicated to the gray areas of life that are difficult to process, especially when conflicting parties have conflicting opinions:
"Nearly all the scenes in the movie concern situations with diffuse boundaries and difficult gray areas: Truth or lie? Victim or abuser? Guilty or innocent? Play or violence? Have we ever had such unclear boundaries between what’s right and wrong – when such conflicting notions have been so close to each other?”
Who Else Was Involved in 'Armand'?
In landing Reinsve to lead the cast, Tøndel brought back an actress who was already a Cannes favorite. She's best known for her breakout performance in The Worst Person in the World, for which she won Best Actress at the festival. Following that, she's since taken on roles in Handling the Undead, A Different Man, and, most recently, the limited series turned legal anthology Presumed Innocent on Apple TV+. The cast around her includes Ellen Dorrit Petersen, Endre Hellestveit, Thea Lambrechts Vaulen, Øystein Røger, and Vera Veljovic.
Armand arrives in theaters on February 7. Check out the trailer in the player above.

Variety is debuting the trailer, poster and a fresh still for “Armand,” which has been shortlisted for the international feature film Oscar. IFC Films launches the Norwegian film in U.S. theaters on Feb. 7, for a limited release, and wide on Feb 14. The poster, shown below, is designed by esteemed artist Akiko Stehrenberger.
Halfdan Ullmann Tøndel’s claustrophobic drama premiered at Cannes Film Festival in Un Certain Regard, where it won the Caméra d’Or for best first feature. The film stars Renate Reinsve, who won Cannes’ best actress award for “The Worst Person in the World,” and Ellen Dorrit Petersen.
“Armand” centers on well-known actress Elisabeth, who is abruptly called into a parent-teacher meeting at her 6-year-old son’s school after hours. Here she is presented with allegations that trigger a tangled web of accusations between parents and faculty. “As Elisabeth struggles to uncover the truth amid the empty school rooms and dark corridors, a chaotic fight for redemption arises where desire, madness and obsession prevail,” according to the film’s production notes.

Ullmann Tøndel comments in an interview: “Nearly all the scenes in the movie concern situations with diffuse boundaries and difficult gray areas: Truth or lie? Victim or abuser? Guilty or innocent? Play or violence? Have we ever had such unclear boundaries between what’s right and wrong – when such conflicting notions have been so close to each other?”
The film’s drama is ignited by an incident between two boys, Jon and Armand, that “could be completely innocent, or very serious depending on how you look at it, and how you choose to contextualise it,” the director explains. “With that in mind I saw that the film could be more about how we, as adults, construct our own realities to fit with the perception of our identity and lives, rather than a story about two small boys having a conflict, which I was less interested in.”
The film is produced by Andrea Berentsen Ottmar for Eye Eye Pictures. Berentsen Ottmar’s credits include “The Worst Person in the World” and “Sick of Myself.”
Kepler Film, One Two Films, Prolaps and Film i Väst are the co-production companies. The co-producers are Koji Nelissen, Derk-Jan Warrink, Fred Burle, Sol Bondy, Alicia Hansen, Stina Eriksson, Kristina Börjeson and Magnus Thomassen.
World sales are being handled by Charades.

We watched the film when it debuted at last year’s Cannes Film Festival, and in our review, we said, “Considering the entire film takes place in the confines of the school building, it’s a testament to Tøndel’s direction and Reinsve’s enthralling performance that the film avoids feeling claustrophobic.” We further complimented Reinsve’s performance and said, “She’s so good you simply want to see her in everything. Just wow.”

Halfdan Ullmann Tøndel, the grandson of Liv Ullmann and Ingmar Bergman, makes his feature directorial debut with “Armand.” Tøndel and Reinsve previously collaborated on a 2016 short film, with Tøndel telling IndieWire that even at the time, it was “obvious we were going to make something bigger one day.”
“Armand” has become an acclaimed festival favorite since debuting at Cannes.
IndieWire Deputy Editor of Film Ryan Lattanzio wrote in the review for the feature that Reinsve’s star-making turn as Elisabeth is at times even reminiscent of Isabelle Adjani’s iconic “Possession” performance.
“Even as Ullmann Tøndel’s two-hour movie grows a bit too winding and weird for its short film-scale conceit, Reinsve grounds the film’s more experimental, almost stagelike leanings in a constant state of heightened emotion that will make you love her even more than in ‘Worst Person’ — and, even better, will make you scared of her,” Lattanzio wrote. “As much as Reinsve proved herself the ideal vessel to portray millennial angst and ennui in ‘The Worst Person in the World,’ here she establishes herself as an ultimate portrayer of women on the edge and admiring the view before completely toppling over it. It’s thrilling to watch her free-fall from the hands of a director impressively carrying his family’s legacy with a vivid, creepy, and uncomfortably funny debut that burrows into the mind.”

Renate Reinsve (Norwegian pronunciation: [rɛˈnɑ̀ːtə ˈræ̀ɪnˌsveː]; born 24 November 1987) is a Norwegian actress. She made her film debut in Oslo, August 31st (2011). In 2021, she had her breakout role in the critically acclaimed drama The Worst Person in the World (2021), for which she won the Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Actress[1][2] and received a nomination for the BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role. She has since starred in the American legal thriller series Presumed Innocent and drama film A Different Man (both 2024).
Early life
Born in Solbergelva in 1987 and educated at Kunsthøgskolen i Oslo, Reinsve then joined the Trøndelag Teater.[3]
After being expelled from school at 16, Reinsve left Norway for Scotland and stayed in a hostel in Edinburgh. Running out of money, she was given a job in the bar of the hostel by the manager as he "felt sorry for [her]".[4]
Career
Reinsve in 2022
In 2014, she received the Hedda Award for her role in Besøk av gammel dame, an adaptation of Friedrich Dürrenmatt's play Der Besuch der alten Dame. Since 2016, she has been contracted to Det Norske Teatret.[3] Her films include Oslo, August 31st (2011), The Orheim Company (2012), and Welcome to Norway (2016).[3] On television, she has been a main character in Nesten voksen[5] and side character in Hvite gutter.[6]
In 2021, Reinsve played the principal character Julie in Joachim Trier's romantic comedy-drama The Worst Person in the World, which premiered at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival to critical acclaim.[7][8][9][10] On Late Night with Seth Meyers, Reinsve mentioned that she was considering quitting acting the day before she was offered the role of Julie, and had considered carpentry as a backup plan to acting.[11] Trier had written the part of Julie specifically for her.[12] Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian praised the film giving it a five star review declaring, "Renate Reinsve is the actor who takes on this role and she takes off like a rocket, deserving star status to rival Lily James or Alicia Vikander for her tremendously mature, sensitive and sympathetic performance."[13] For her performance she received numerous accolades including the Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Actress as well as a nomination for the BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role.[14]
Reinsve at the 2024 Berlinale
Reinsve acted in two films which competed at the 74th Berlin International Film Festival, the first being Aaron Schimberg's psychological drama A Different Man co-starring opposite Sebastian Stan and the second being Piero Messina's science-fiction romance Another End with Gael Garcia Bernal.[15][16] Reinsve acted in the film Armand directed by Halfdan Ullmann Tøndel which premiered at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival.[17] The film is described as "A story about boundaries - not mainly between the kids, but between the adults involved. Who decides where to set them? What is an assault, what is play, what is consent and what is privacy?".[18] Also in 2024 she played a lover and victim in the Apple TV+ legal thriller series Presumed Innocent acting opposite Jake Gyllenhaal. The series was based on the 1987 novel of the same name.[19]
In 2023, it was announced that Reinsve would reunite with Joachim Trier for the family drama film Sentimental Value.[20] Filming commenced in August 2024.[21]
