Officials released bodycam footage Wednesday showing a Florida man shoot through a window while two Louisville Metro Police officers stood nearby during a trouble run on Dec. 28.
The video, which LMPD Chief Paul Humphrey shared for the first time during a news conference, showed the perspectives of both officers as they stood near a window on the side of a Germantown neighborhood Airbnb in the 1100 block of Reutlinger Avenue.
One officer stood behind a gate dividing the backyard from the side of the home where the window is, while the other officer stood on the side of the home directly next to the window. The officers stand still for a few moments while communicating through radios before a shot abruptly rings out, shattering the glass window, the footage shows. Both officers immediately move to a safer area and the footage ends.
According to court records, Tombe Juma-Kose Thomas, 35, of Osteen, Florida was staying at the home with his girlfriend while visiting family in Louisville for the holidays.
Before Fourth Division officers from LMPD arrived, Thomas barricaded himself in a bathroom, as he was under the impression that his girlfriend had brought an unknown person into the residence.
When officers arrived, they reportedly knocked on the bathroom window and announced their presence — though this part of the interaction is not shown in the footage — before Thomas fired a single gunshot through a window at or near the height of the officers' heads.
Thomas eventually exited the residence with the handgun and was taken into custody, telling police it was a "warning shot," records show. Thomas is being held in the Louisville Metro Detention Center on a $250,000 bond, according to court records.
Thomas was scheduled to appear in court Wednesday, but an update on his case is not yet available.
