William Lewis Tells his Story of Exploring the Louisiana Territory on his Expedition to the Pacific

My name is William Clark, and I’d like to share my story with you. I was born in 1770 in Caroline County, Virginia, the ninth of ten children in a hardworking family. When I was a young boy, my family moved to Kentucky, which was part of the untamed frontier at the time. Growing up in such a wild and rugged place taught me about the land, the rivers, and how to survive in nature. It was a hard life, but one that shaped me into who I would become.

When I was old enough, I joined the militia and later served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army. It was during my time in the army that I met Meriwether Lewis. He was my superior officer, but more importantly, he became my lifelong friend. After some years in the military, I retired to manage my family’s land, but in 1803, Lewis approached me with an opportunity that would change both of our lives forever. President Thomas Jefferson had tasked him with leading an expedition to explore the lands acquired in the Louisiana Purchase, and Lewis wanted me to join him as his co-leader. I didn’t hesitate. It was a chance to do something truly historic.

The journey, known as the Corps of Discovery, began in 1804. With a team of brave men and the remarkable Sacagawea, who served as our guide and interpreter, we set out from St. Louis to explore the uncharted West. It was an adventure like no other. We navigated the Missouri River, crossed the Rocky Mountains, and finally reached the Pacific Ocean. Along the way, we encountered Native American tribes, many of whom helped us survive. We documented new plants and animals, created maps, and opened the door for the westward expansion of our young nation. It wasn’t easy—there were times when we thought we wouldn’t make it—but we believed in our mission. When we returned in 1806, we were hailed as heroes.

After the expedition, my life took a different path. I became the governor of the Missouri Territory and later served as Superintendent of Indian Affairs. I worked to maintain peaceful relationships between the United States and Native American tribes, though I often felt the struggles of balancing the interests of both sides. I married and had a family, though I endured great personal losses over the years, including the death of my beloved wife.

Even as I grew older, the journey we undertook remained a defining part of my life. The maps we made, the discoveries we documented, and the relationships we forged all contributed to the growth of our nation. I hope my story reminds you that great challenges can lead to great accomplishments. Whether it’s exploring new lands or facing your own personal journeys, the key is to step forward with courage, determination, and a sense of purpose.
