Sandy Hook Proving Ground and the Sinking of the Tilton

In 1874, the Army Ordnance Department got their hands on a wonderful piece of prime real estate named “Sandy Hook” on which, there could have been hotels and amusement parks.
So, of course, the government turned it into a bomb range.
Over the next 50 years, the Sandy Hook Proving Ground would develop into an essential asset for research, development, test and evaluation of all manner of landscape adjustment tools.
Naturally, safety was a concern, but despite mostly sensible precautions, a propellant test in 1892 would accidentally put a hole into the side of a sailboat, sending it to the watery deep.
