I have tried several devices from the Mocreo home monitoring system but this new one is rather different. All the other sensors have had to be used with the Mocreo Hub, but this new $21.99 fridge and freezer sensor has three operating modes and can work as a stand alone device. I should add that as the system operates over a very wide temperature range - -40°C~105°C it need not be used just to monitor cold environments and could just as easily be used in a greenhouse or indoor swimming pool.

In the rather plain box, I received the combined battery holder and transmitter with a hard wired sensor probe attached, a sticky mount to secure the battery holder/transmitter, a cable suction mount, and a well printed and easy to read user guide. Build quality seem light weight but decent quality with nothing looking likely to fail or fall off any time soon.

The device consists of a combined battery box and Bluetooth transceiver with a hard wired temperature probe on the end of a 1.5 m cable. It is powered by a standard 9v 6LR61 battery (widely available under different names) which fits inside the box. Each battery will last up to two years.

The device can be used in three ways:

As a standalone device with no app needed other than for the initial setup procedure. 110dB audio alerts from the device itself.

Bluetooth connected to the Mocreo Smart app and using the app to configure the ST8. Display current and past sensor data in the app. 110dB audio alerts from the ST8 plus alerts from the Mocreo Smart app when in Bluetooth range.

On the Mocreo system connected to the Mocreo Hub allowing the ST8 to be monitored and controlled from anywhere on the internet. 110dB audio alerts from the hub as well as the ST8 itself plus real time push alerts and emails from the Mocreo Smart app when connected to a Wifi or mobile network.

Connecting up is easy enough, but will need the Mocreo Smart app for the initial setup even when using the device in standalone mode. Open the app and hit the Add Device button and then select the ST8 option. Make sure the battery is connected and the sensor turned on with the button on the side and the app will find and connect to your ST8 sensor.

You can then configure the audible alarm to go off when the device detects it is too warm or too cold.

You can now position the battery box next to the Freezer or fridge you wish to monitor with the sensor probe inside it. The probe comes attached to a special flat cable which can be passed through the door seal without compromising the seal's integrity. A switch on the side of the box turns the device Audio alarm off an on

Email and phone push alerts can be made from the Mocreo Smart app with the current sensor status can be viewed in real time on the app screen as well as the hub as well as exporting up to two years of data.

My only criticism is that the battery box is not magnetic, freezers and fridges are almost always made from metal and would lend themselves well to a magnetic mount. Actually, I do have one more criticism and that is that the Mocreo ecosystem will not connect to Alexa or Google Home.

The Mocreo system has a high end look and feel to it and I have much more confidence in the accuracy and reliability of the hardware. The Mocreo system is not inexpensive, far from it, but sometimes it is worth paying more to get the best.
