Origin of the Noah Flood Myth
The tale of Noah, as recounted in the Book of Genesis, has long been celebrated as a cornerstone of Judeo-Christian theology, purporting to explain the world's renewal through divine intervention. Yet, when subjected to critical scrutiny, especially through the lens of comparative mythology, the historicity of Noah and his ark begins to unravel, revealing itself not as a factual account but as a derivative myth, heavily borrowed from older Mesopotamian narratives.
...
Firstly, the very notion of Noah's flood as a historical event crumbles under the weight of archaeological and geological evidence. No global flood, as described by the Hebrew Bible, has ever been substantiated by science, and geological records do not support the existence of a worldwide deluge capable of wiping out all land-dwelling creatures except those on one ship.
...
Moreover, the narrative of Noah seems strikingly similar to the Mesopotamian flood stories, particularly the Epic of Gilgamesh and the Atrahasis Epic. Here, we encounter Utnapishtim and Atrahasis, respectively, who are instructed by their gods to build boats to survive a divine flood meant to destroy humanity due to its noise or rebellion. These stories predate the biblical account by centuries, with the Sumerian and Akkadian texts dating back to at least 2000 BCE.
...
The specifics of the boat construction, the sending of birds to check for dry land, and even the divine regret post-flood in these Mesopotamian texts echo profoundly in Genesis. Terms like "kopher" (pitch) in Hebrew, which only appears in the context of Noah's ark, directly correlate with the Akkadian "kupru," used in similar contexts in these older myths. This linguistic and narrative borrowing strongly suggests that the Noah story is not an independent historical event but a literary adaptation.
...
The biblical narrative attempts to distinguish itself by portraying Yahweh as a just deity, contrasting with the often capricious gods of Mesopotamian lore. However, this moral reframing does not salvage the story's historicity. Instead, it highlights the theological agenda of the biblical authors to present their God as more righteous while still utilizing a framework well-known to the ancient audience.
...
The genealogies leading to Noah, like those from Adam, Cain, and Seth, bear the marks of literary invention rather than historical documentation. The discrepancies and contradictions within these genealogies suggest they were constructed to establish a theological narrative rather than to provide an accurate historical lineage.
...
The story of Noah fits neatly into a pattern of myth-making common in ancient civilizations where natural disasters are explained through divine narratives. These myths serve to impart moral lessons, establish cultural identity, and explain human suffering or renewal, rather than document historical truths.
...
While compelling and central to biblical theology, the figure of Noah stands more as a character of myth than of history. The flood narrative in Genesis is a sophisticated theological reinterpretation of much older, pagan myths. It is designed more to preach about divine judgment and covenant than to recount a verifiable event. As such, the story of Noah should be approached as a literary and cultural artifact, rich in meaning but devoid of historical veracity. Those who defend its historicity are not just defending a narrative but are, perhaps unknowingly, advocating for a tradition of myth-making that has shaped human understanding of morality, divinity, and the cosmos through the ages.
