This Valentine’s Day, you might be seeing red. Sony Pictures has released the first trailer for “Heart Eyes,” the upcoming horror romantic comedy directed by “Werewolves Within” filmmaker/Dropout regular Josh Ruben.

Written by Phillip Murphy and “Freaky” co-writers Michael Kennedy and Christopher Landon, “Heart Eyes” stars Olivia Holt (“Cruel Summer”) and Mason Gooding (“Scream”) as a pair of unlucky coworkers who find themselves hunted by a masked killer on Valentine’s Day.

The official synopsis reads: “When the Heart Eyes Killer strikes Seattle, a pair of co-workers pulling overtime on Valentine’s Day are mistaken for a couple by the elusive couple-hunting killer. Now they must spend the most romantic night of the year running for their lives.”

Jordana Brewster, Gigi Zumbado, and horror mainstay Devon Sawa also star. Ruben expressed his excitement for the project in a previous statement: “My love of horror is rivaled only by my love of romantic comedies. I’m excited as hell to mount my most challenging genre bender to date: a brutal slasher in a nostalgic rom-com universe.”

“Heart Eyes” is produced by Spyglass Media Group and Divide/Conquer. Filming took place in New Zealand in June of 2024 with cinematographer Stephen Murphy. The film will be distributed by Screen Gems through Sony Pictures Releasing in the United States and globally by Republic Pictures.

Landon, Greg Gilreath and Adam Hendricks produced, with Gary Barber, Chris Stone, Mel Turner, Murphy and Kennedy serving as executive producers.

Heart Eyes stars Olivia Holt (Totally Killer) and Mason Gooding (Scream) as a couple whose Valentine's Day plans are interrupted by the notorious Heart Eyes Killer. The killer resurfaces every Feb. 14 to kill unsuspecting lovebirds, all while rocking a spooky mask with heart-shaped eyeholes and some gnarly heart-tipped arrows. Fittingly, the trailer describes the Heart Eyes Killer as "Cupid, with a kink."

With this love-hating murderer on the loose, no couple is safe. But could Holt and Gooding have what it takes to bring the Heart Eyes Killer to justice?

The film is directed by Josh Ruben and produced by Spyglass Media Group. The script is written by Phillip Murphy, Michael Kennedy and Christopher Landon.[2]

Filming took place in New Zealand in June 2024.[2] In October, it was announced that Jay Wadley was composing the film's score.[3]

Release
In June 2024, Republic Pictures acquired worldwide distribution rights outside the United States and Canada to the film.[4] In September, Sony Pictures acquired the North American distribution rights and set a theatrical release date of February 7, 2025.[5][6]
