Rapper YNW Melly's lead defense attorney under investigation as motions hearing reset

The case of South Florida rapper YNW Melly, whose real name is Jamell Demons, faced another delay on Monday as discussions emerged regarding an investigation into his lead defense attorney, Ravon Liberty. The Broward judge was scheduled to address a series of motions, but proceedings were paused due to the probe into Liberty, which is tied to a 2023 evidence tampering charge involving Demons.

Demons, who has been in custody since February 2019, is accused of murdering his two childhood friends and music collaborators, YNW Juvy and YNW SakChaser, following a late-night recording session. Prosecutors allege he staged the killings to look like a drive-by shooting. The case has drawn widespread attention, not only for its shocking allegations but also for Melly's rising fame at the time, including his hit song “Murder on My Mind” and a collaboration with Kanye West.

Prosecutors confirmed the investigation into Liberty on Monday, prompting Demons' other attorneys to express concerns about potential delays to his double murder retrial. Broward County Judge Martin Fein emphasized Demons’ right to "conflict-free counsel" and noted the decision to continue with Liberty or choose new representation lies with him.

Liberty, absent from Monday's hearing due to weather-related travel issues, has not been charged, and the investigation remains ongoing. Judge Fein decided that further progress in the case must wait until Liberty can appear in court and the defense gains clarity on the investigation.

The hearing was rescheduled for Tuesday morning. Meanwhile, Demons' retrial, initially set for September 2023, follows a mistrial declared in his first trial during the summer of that year.

With the investigation into Liberty potentially impacting the case’s timeline, Demons and his legal team face critical decisions in the weeks ahead.
