In September 2019, Robin Howington of Knoxville, Tennessee, was arrested in connection to the tragic death of her 5-year-old daughter, Destiny Oliver, who died from gunshot wounds on September 14. Investigations revealed conflicting statements made by Howington, who initially blamed a stranger, then accused the child’s father, her boyfriend, and even her two-year-old son for the shooting. Howington claimed her son found a gun in a closet and accidentally shot his sister. However, surveillance footage later showed Howington hiding the weapon, which was later discovered in a nearby bush. When confronted, she admitted to hiding the gun but claimed she did so out of a “maternal instinct.”
Howington was indicted by a grand jury on charges of first-degree murder, child neglect, false reporting, tampering with evidence, and attempting to tamper with evidence in relation to Destiny’s death. She was held on a $500,000 bond. Further investigation revealed that Howington attempted to destroy her cell phone at the hospital, allegedly in an attempt to conceal illegal marijuana sales, by running it underwater.
