Trudeau has been the leader of the Liberal Party for 11 years, and Prime Minister for nine.  He’s faced growing pressure from his own party’s lawmakers to step down and faced numerous crisis like the resignation of key allies, high inflation, disastrous opinion polls and tariff threats from President Donald Trump.

Trudeau was widely expected to lose the general election that will be held later this year, with his resignation being seen as the Prime Minister choosing to leave before being pushed out.
