🚴 A gruelling but unforgettable summer gravel loop ride through Martinborough’s wine country and rural back-roads, pushing the limits of endurance and determination. Starting mid-afternoon, the route began on chipseal roads amidst scenic vineyards. It soon transitioned into winding country roads with broken tarmac, before concluding on rugged gravel. With air temperatures soaring to 32ºC, the ride quickly became a test of resilience.

Around two-thirds into the ride, water supplies ran out by dusk, turning the final stretch into a demanding night-time effort beneath a starlit sky. Passing by sheep farms, horse paddocks, and scenic country landscapes, the route featured a mix of sweeping descents, rugged washboard gravel, and 11 significant climbs. The 8-hour adventure came close to breaking both body and spirit, but like any great challenge of endurance and exploration, it created a story worth telling.

This ride captures the beauty and challenges of New Zealand’s rural cycling trails, making it a must-do experience for gravel biking enthusiasts.
