The Hebrew word for Strike in EXO 17 is naka נָכָה = strike and it is in the singular, so strike the Rock ONCE.I will stand there before you by the rock at Horeb. Strike the rock (once), and water will come out of it for the people to drink.” So, Moses did this in the sight of the elders of Israel. And he called the place Massah and Meribah (place of testing and quarreling) because the Israelites quarreled and because they tested the LORD saying, “Is the LORD among us or not?”
Most scholars, commentators suppose that the first month here means the first month of the fortieth year. This is when the Israelites are thought to have arrived for the second time at the area of Kadesh Barnea. The Israelites started out at this place, and now they are back. Indeed, they have spent 40 years wandering around the desert waiting for an entire generation to die off.
They say: If only we too had died when our brothers perished before GOD. We can assume this is a reference to those who died in the aftermath of Korah’s rebellion back in Ch 16. Although it was also a reference to those who died in the wilderness from other reasons.
There is no record of what Moses and Aaron said to GOD at this point. But we can assume that the phrase “falling on the face” is used to describe prayer that is being said before the LORD. We see that the Glory of the LORD appeared to them.
The word for rock here (sela) is different from that of EXO indicates a cliff or foot of a Mountain rather than a boulder.
