Steve McQueen’s Blitz on Apple TV is visually striking but emotionally shallow. Despite stellar cinematography and decent performances from Elliott Heffernan and Saoirse Ronan, the film’s fragmented narrative and underdeveloped characters fall flat.

McQueen’s exploration of racism and social inequality feels nuanced and insightful at times, but at other times, it comes off as heavy-handed, diluting the power of these very themes that he wants to communicate via his vignettes.

In the end, Blitz prioritizes style over substance, presenting a collection of loosely connected skits / vignettes rather than a cohesive story about George and Rita.

While the technical craftsmanship is impressive, the film misses its mark, delivering a visually polished yet ultimately unsatisfying addition to the WWII genre. McQueen’s artistic flair can’t make up for the lackluster storytelling and bizarre pacing / editing decisions.
