Relevance: The keyword should be closely related to the content of your website or business. It should match the intent of your target audience and align with the products, services, or topics you are offering. For example, if you have a website about digital marketing, keywords like "SEO tips," "content marketing," or "online advertising" would be highly relevant.

Search Volume: The keyword should have a significant search volume, meaning it is being searched for frequently by users. Using tools like Google Keyword Planner or SEMrush, you can identify keywords with a high number of monthly searches. However, high search volume should be balanced with competition (explained below).

Competition (Keyword Difficulty): The keyword should not be overly competitive, especially if you're a new website or lack significant domain authority. Analyzing keyword difficulty helps you understand how hard it will be to rank for that keyword. Ideally, aim for keywords with moderate competition and high relevance. Long-tail keywords (phrases with more than three words) can often be easier to rank for while still being effective.

Conversion Potential: The keyword should be able to drive traffic that is likely to convert into leads or sales. Not all search terms are created equal — some may drive a lot of traffic but fail to generate business. For instance, a keyword like "how to start a blog" might get many searches but may not convert into sales for a business selling blogging tools. Keywords with clear commercial intent (e.g., "best SEO tools 2025" or "buy digital marketing courses") tend to have higher conversion potential.
