On December 3, 2024, around 3:20 p.m., police responded to a reported pedestrian in the roadway at the corner of East Rector Drive and Jones Maltsberger Road.

Police Chief William McManus told the press on the scene that the incident began when an officer attempted to stop a pedestrian walking on the roadway.

That pedestrian fled from police, who began the pursuit on foot, where the pedestrian ran into a drainage ditch alongside the road.

When police attempted to make contact, the man, believed to be in his late 20s, allegedly pulled out a handgun and pointed it at the officer, prompting the officer to fire at the suspect.

The suspect continued to flee the scene on foot, before turning around again and allegedly firing a shot towards the officer. The officer returned fire and struck the suspect in the chest.

During the investigation, it was determined the suspect, while in the ditch, shot himself in the head.

The officer, who has been serving for about four years, was uninjured in the shooting.

The Medical Examiner's Office identified the suspect as 33-year-old Jeffery Schopp.

The suspect's firearm, a .22 caliber handgun, was recovered from the scene.
