Authorities share new details surrounding Cybertruck bombing outside Las Vegas Trump hotel
Las Vegas police released excerpts from notes that the driver of Cybertruck explosion wrote days before the incident.
The explosion happened morning of New Year’s Day in the valet area of Trump International Hotel Las Vegas. The driver died and the explosion injured multiple others.
Thursday, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department and the Clark County coroner identified the suspect as Matthew Livelsberger. He died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
LVMPD Sheriff Kevin McMahill provided an update Friday that the others injured were treated for “minor” injuries and have since been released medical care. UMC hospital treated two people from this incident and they have also been released.
The coroner said it was a challenge to identify Livelsberger’s body as it was “burnt beyond recognition.” FOX5 learned he was an active-duty soldier from Colorado Springs.
Friday, LVMPD and FBI Las Vegas gathered for a press briefing on their third day into this investigation. McMahill said they confirmed the following: There is no further threat, they can positively identify the suspect, and there are no other bad actors.
Police continue to work on plans and motives for the explosion but have shared some ideas to the public based off a diary-type of journal on one of his two phones found in the Cybertruck.
Police are working to gain access into the other phone and one laptop found in the truck. They are getting hourly updates.
McMahill also addressed a podcast that is discussing contents of a letter that reportedly belonged to Livelsberger, but as of this moment, police will not discuss that. Metro says they aim to share what’s verified and factually accurate.
Police shared excerpts on his phone:
“This was not a terrorist attack, it was a wake up call. Americans only pay attention to spectacles and violence. What better way to get my point across than a stunt with fireworks and explosives?”
“We are the United States of America, the best country people to ever exist! But right now we are terminally ill and headed toward collapse.”
“Fellow Service members, and all Americans: TIME TO WAKE UP. We are being led by weak and feckless leadership who only serve to enrich themselves.”McMahill said they were able to further identify Livelsberger as the suspect through additional photos and help from his wife. Police shared photos of another tattoo on his body and him wearing a distinct brown jacket while using the Cybertruck.A forensic investigation into the Cybertruck that Livelsberger rented from Turo in Denver on Dec. 28 located his military IDs, passport, and several guns. Police tracked the vehicle’s movements through Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, and Nevada, using data from Tesla charging stations.
McMahill says they do not know why Livelsberger chose Las Vegas and specifically the Trump hotel, but evidence indicates a location in the Grand Canyon was considered.Police said diary on one phone started Dec. 21 of last year to Jan. 1. Police said the diary matched the route he took with the Cybertruck. It also details the firearms he purchased and camping equipment.
FBI Las Vegas confirmed that Livelsberger legally purchased two firearms on Dec. 27 in Colorado and picked them up three days later.
LVMPD said they received further help from Tesla. An SDMI chip confirmed that the Tesla was never in self-driving mode while Livelsberger had the truck.
Police said they also did a background check on Livelsberger. He had no criminal history. After the explosion, LVMPD Sheriff Kevin McMahill said their will be increased patrol on the Las Vegas Strip and downtown. The explosion would happen only hours after another driver, 42-year-old Shamsud-Din Bahar Jabbar, rammed a truck into a crowd in New Orleans’ famed French Quarter early on New Year’s Day, killing at least 15 people before being shot to death by police.
FBI Las Vegas says it is coincidental that the F-150 used by Jabbar and the Cybertruck Livelsberger rented were from the same carsharing company. FBI says that they found no telephone or email communication between the two and they were never assigned at the same time during military service.
Both LVMPD and the FBI say Livelsberger suffered from PTSD, personal grievances and family factors, according to the notes on his phone. Police said the incident was “thoughtfully prepared.”
“This is a tragic case of suicide,” FBI said.
FBI Las Vegas said the Southern Nevada Resiliency Justice Center is offering help to those who are impacted by this incident.
