Psalm 144: Rock and Refuge Blues
** Psalm 144 is a powerful song of praise and prayer written by King David, a warrior and poet who deeply trusted in Yahweh. As a leader who faced countless battles, David relied on God as his rock, fortress, and deliverer. This psalm reflects his gratitude for divine protection, his recognition of human frailty, and his hope for God’s blessing upon his people. It serves as both a personal prayer and a national anthem, calling on God to strengthen and guide His people in every season.
David’s heartfelt cry shows us a man who, despite his military strength, knew that ultimate victory and peace come only from the Lord. The psalm captures the balance of worship and warfare, dependence and gratitude, and the hope for a righteous and blessed society.
** Original Scripture (Psalm 144, WEB)
Blessed be Yahweh, my rock,
who teaches my hands to war,
and my fingers to battle:
2
my loving kindness, my fortress,
my high tower, my deliverer,
my shield, and he in whom I take refuge,
who subdues my people under me.
3
Yahweh, what is man, that you care for him?
Or the son of man, that you think of him?
4
Man is like a breath.
His days are like a shadow that passes away.
5
Part your heavens, Yahweh, and come down.
Touch the mountains, and they will smoke.
6
Throw out lightning, and scatter them.
Send out your arrows, and rout them.
7
Stretch out your hand from above,
rescue me, and deliver me out of great waters,
out of the hands of foreigners,
8
whose mouths speak deceit,
whose right hand is a right hand of falsehood.
9
I will sing a new song to you, God.
On a ten-stringed lyre, I will sing praises to you.
10
You are he who gives salvation to kings,
who rescues David, his servant, from the deadly sword.
11
Rescue me, and deliver me out of the hands of foreigners,
whose mouths speak deceit,
whose right hand is a right hand of falsehood.
12
Then our sons will be like well-nurtured plants,
our daughters like pillars carved to adorn a palace.
13
Our barns are full, filled with all kinds of provision.
Our sheep produce thousands and ten thousands in our fields.
14
Our oxen will pull heavy loads.
There is no breaking in, and no going away,
and no outcry in our streets.
15
Happy are the people who are in such a situation.
Happy are the people whose God is Yahweh.
** Lyrics: Psalm 144 Rock and Refuge Blues
(Inspired by Psalm 144)
[Verse 1]
Blessed be Yahweh, my rock, my shield,
He trains these hands for war, my strength revealed.
He’s my fortress, my tower so high,
My deliverer’s love won’t pass me by.
[Chorus]
What is man, Lord, that You think of me?
A shadow that fades, like breath on the breeze.
Stretch out Your hand, Lord, touch the sky,
Deliver me, Yahweh, don’t pass me by.
[Verse 2]
The mountains smoke when You touch the ground,
Your lightning scatters all foes around.
Out of great waters, Lord, rescue me,
From the hand of deceit, set me free.
[Bridge]
“Happy are the people whose God is the Lord,”
You’ve filled our barns, You’ve blessed our sword.
Our sons like plants, growing strong and true,
Our daughters like pillars in a palace view.
[Chorus]
What is man, Lord, that You think of me?
A shadow that fades, like breath on the breeze.
Stretch out Your hand, Lord, touch the sky,
Deliver me, Yahweh, don’t pass me by.
[Verse 3]
I’ll sing You a new song on my ten-stringed lyre,
A melody born from a heart on fire.
You give salvation, You rescue kings,
From deadly swords and everything.
[Outro]
Blessed be Yahweh, my rock, my shield,
In Your refuge, my soul is healed.
Happy are the people who call You Lord,
Forever safe in Your mighty accord.
