The group was founded by Mohammed Yusuf and initially operated as a religious organization advocating for strict Islamic principles. Boko Haram has been responsible for widespread violence, including bombings, assassinations, and mass kidnappings (abduction of over 200 schoolgirls in Chibok). Their goal is to establish an Islamic state governed by Sharia law in Nigeria.
