What Did the "Mum" on Japanese Rifles Really Mean?

The accepted historical orthodoxy is that the chrysanthemum symbol on Japanese rifles from 1880 to 1945 meant the arm belonged to the emperor himself and was merely entrusted to the soldier carrying it. Is that just fudd lore or is there actual evidence to back it up? After being told he was wrong on the matter, the Redneck Preppy decided to look into the question.
