Botox, short for Botulinum toxin, is a medical product derived from a neurotoxic protein produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. Though the toxin itself can cause a serious condition called botulism, in controlled and small doses, Botox is widely used for both medical and cosmetic purposes. Botox works by temporarily paralyzing muscles. It blocks the release of a neurotransmitter called acetylcholine, which prevents muscle contraction. This effect smooths out wrinkles and can also address various medical conditions.
