Maldives Opposition Sought Millions in Payments From India To Impeach Muizzu: Reports

A report claims that politicians from the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) asked India for $6 million earlier this year to fund a plan to impeach President Mohamed Muizzu. However, the plan did not go through. The report, based on an internal document called the ‘Democratic Renewal Initiative,’ detailed a plot to bribe 40 members of Parliament, including some from Muizzu’s party, to secure enough votes for his impeachment. The document also outlined plans to pay senior military and police officials and involve three criminal gangs in the effort to remove Muizzu from office. The $6 million, equivalent to 87 million Maldivian rufiyaa, was reportedly intended to cover these payments.
