Russia has strongly opposed Western peacekeeping troops in Ukraine, rejecting proposals from Western leaders, including French President Macron and Polish Prime Minister Tusk, for deploying foreign forces to enforce a ceasefire. Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov criticised suggestions from US President-elect Trump’s team, such as delaying Ukraine’s NATO membership for 20 years or sending European peacekeepers to the front line. Trump claimed he could strike a peace deal within 24 hours and proposed leveraging US military aid to Kyiv. Meanwhile, Moscow demands Ukraine withdraw its forces from four annexed regions and insists negotiations address NATO’s expansion as a root cause of the conflict. Slovak Defence Minister Kalinak suggested Ukraine might need to cede territory for peace, a view Kyiv has firmly rejected. In a contrasting approach, President Biden announced a $2.5 billion aid package for Ukraine to bolster its defence, signalling unwavering support from the US administration before Trump’s transition. The assistance includes HIMARS ammunition, anti-tank systems and other weaponry to strengthen Ukraine’s resistance against Russian aggression. Both sides remain far apart on a settlement despite President Putin expressing willingness to negotiate with Trump, emphasising the need for compromise to end the conflict.
