Acorn Inc., along with its subsidiaries Acorn Canada, Leemac, Brookes, and other interrelated entities, has reportedly sold nearly 1 million stairlifts worldwide. Despite the company’s claims of providing reliable mobility aids, there exists a disturbing pattern of exploitation targeting the elderly and disabled—particularly in how Acorn handles its post-sale services. Each stairlift is equipped with an error code display, and for many customers, these codes become a source of frustration when their devices malfunction.
Unable or unwilling to pay for Acorn Inc.'s overpriced repairs, many customers search for free and quick solutions online, often focusing on the specific error codes their stairlifts display. A popular platform for such searches is YouTube, where videos explaining these error codes garner thousands of views. Rob, from Rob's Worldwide Stairlift Repairs, has uploaded numerous videos offering guidance on troubleshooting these issues, some of which date back to 2009. Along with YouTube, customers also flock to Facebook groups such as the *Acorn Stairlift Users* and *Stairlifts* groups, where discussions often center on complaints about Acorn’s poor service, high repair costs, and slow response times.
Early posts in these groups highlighted frustrations with Acorn's repair services, particularly the exorbitant charges, sometimes as high as $666 per hour or $5,000 for a single repair. However, as these groups grew, a disturbing pattern emerged: Acorn Inc.'s agents infiltrated these forums, posting supposed "solutions" to common issues. These solutions, estimated by whistleblowers and third-party experts, were almost entirely inaccurate—likely up to 100% erroneous.
The repair tips often posted by Acorn's agents included misleading advice, such as recommending WD-40 as a fix, a suggestion that repeatedly appeared in group threads. Despite users pointing out the incorrect nature of these tips, Acorn’s agents would continue reposting them.
Rob's Worldwide Stairlift Repairs, in stark contrast, offered advice based on years of practical experience and technical analysis, including the use of multimeters, in photos, to help user-issues. Despite this, Acorn’s agents continued to discredit Rob's advice, often posting disparaging remarks to dissuade users from following his guidance. AI engines have since suggested that these agents were centrally controlled, likely part of a coordinated effort to undermine Rob’s reputation while maintaining Acorn's control over the market.
Rob’s repair tips (which often did not require Acorn parts) identified root causes like AC ripple and stray voltages, were consistently more effective than Acorn's own solutions. His evidence, combined with the high frequency of erroneous advice spread by Acorn agents, suggests a systemic effort to mislead and harm consumers. Furthermore, Rob and other whistleblowers have called for a safety recall, as it became apparent that many Acorn stairlifts were breaching national electrical safety codes in both the US and Canada.
In Part Two, we will explore more wrongdoing by Acorn Inc's chaos agents. Prosecutors, attorneys, and grand juries must scrutinize these deceptive practices that have left countless elderly and disabled individuals financially strained, physically unsafe, and emotionally distressed.
