Psalm 142: Cry from the Cave

** Psalm 142 is a heartfelt prayer written by David during one of the most challenging times in his life. Hiding in a cave, likely while fleeing from King Saul, David poured out his soul to God. This psalm reflects his desperation, his loneliness, and his unwavering trust in Yahweh as his only refuge and hope. Despite the darkness surrounding him, David’s words demonstrate a profound faith that God will hear his cries, deliver him from danger, and restore him to a place of freedom and praise.

** Original Text (WEB Translation)
A contemplation by David, when he was in the cave. A Prayer.

I cry with my voice to Yahweh.
With my voice, I ask Yahweh for mercy.

I pour out my complaint before him.
I tell him my troubles.

When my spirit was overwhelmed within me,
you knew my route.
On the path in which I walk,
they have hidden a snare for me.

Look on my right and see,
for there is no one who is concerned for me.
Refuge has fled from me.
No one cares for my soul.

I cried to you, Yahweh.
I said, “You are my refuge,
my portion in the land of the living.”

Listen to my cry,
for I am in desperate need.
Deliver me from my persecutors,
for they are stronger than me.

Bring my soul out of prison,
that I may give thanks to your name.
The righteous will surround me,
for you will be good to me.

** Lyrics to "Cry from the Cave"

(Verse 1)
I cry out with my voice to Yahweh,
Mercy, Lord, I plead.
I pour my troubles before You,
Only You know what I need.
When my spirit’s overwhelmed,
You see the traps beneath my feet.

(Verse 2)
On this path, shadows haunt me,
The snares of men run deep.
I look to my right—there’s no one there,
No refuge, no soul to keep.
I am forgotten, like a memory lost,
No one cares if I weep.

(Verse 3)
I cry to You, my refuge,
My portion in the living land.
Hear my voice in this darkened cave,
Rescue me with Your mighty hand.
My persecutors rise against me,
They are stronger than I can stand.

(Bridge)
Bring my soul out of this prison,
So I can praise Your name.
Let the righteous gather ‘round me, Lord,
For Your goodness always remains.
You lift the brokenhearted high,
And restore what fear has claimed.

(Verse 4)
Deliver me from this lonely place,
Where the walls echo my despair.
Your mercy is the song I sing,
Even when the night feels unfair.
Guide me, Lord, through this shadowed valley,
To the light of Your loving care.

(Outro)
Cave walls can’t hold the cry of my soul,
Your love breaks every chain.
Cave walls can’t silence the truth I know—
Your mercy forever reigns.
The righteous will surround me, Lord,
In Your arms, I’ll rise again.
