Curry GALORE in Indonesia: NASI KAPAU 🇮🇩

No Indonesian food trip in Sumatra is complete without trying the legendary Nasi Kapau masters in the town of Bukittinggi. Nasi Kapau is a term that refers to a meal of rice topped with a bunch of traditional Minangkabau dishes from the Bulkittinggi area (as opposed to Nasi Padang, that dishes from Padang City). I chose "Nasi Kapau Uni Lis" because their exposition of Indonesian cuisine is really something that needs to be experienced. They are located in the food section of the Bukittinggi town market; you sit down with locals in the benches all around the food stall, and the atmosphere is really unforgettable.

In this trip from Padang Panjang up to the town of Bukittinggi, I have also included other stops. In fact we starts with the famous traditional breakfast 'Bika Talago', soft and warm biscuits made of coconut, banana and brown sugars. Once we arrive in Bukittinggi, and after a scenic trip through the lush forests of West Sumatra, we hit the Bukittinggi market, where, apart from the Nasi Kapau, you can discover a world of wonderful traditional snacks and desserts. Here I tried 2 types of Minang desserts, Lemang Tapai, which is based on sticky rice swimming in a fermented starch juice, and Pisang Kapik, a banana pancake topped with grated coconut and brown sugar.

In the evening we hit the Jam Gadand square; this is the place where the locals of Bukittinggi gather to get some fresh air, listen to live music, and eat some more street food. We tried here a popular snack which originated exactly in this square, the Kerupuk Mie Kuah, as well as, some more sate Padang (I know I've eaten a lot of sate in this trip!).
