The Deliverance was a movie. Rarely do we get to see black people and their stories as the main plot for a horror movie. Suffice to say we were all extremely excited. Unfortunately The Deliverance did not deliver.

You probably felt it to. The first 20 mins were full of potential and anxiety and then the last 20 mins were such a let down. I know I'm late to the Movie Reaction but I really wanted to understand why I didn't enjoy this movie as much as I thought I would.

I've put my thoughts and others thoughts into this video essay to try and explain what went wrong with this movie. I also watched The Breakfast Club Interview with Lee Daniels and Andra Day to try and understand their intentions when they were making this movie.

I went down a rabbit hole that lead me to Madea, Tyler Perry, Stan Lee and some very uncomfortable discoveries about the origin of the Angry Black Woman. Obviously it is a myth and black women have every right to be angry but I needed to know where it all started.

I also learnt a lot about the difference between a deliverance and an exorcism as well as the different types of exorcisms and deliverances.

I tried to simplify all the information I gathered into this quick video essay on "The Deliverance of A Mad Black Woman".

Here are some of the readings I used in this final video.
