While we are still waiting on a toxicology report to understand what caused 43-year-old stabbing suspect Matthew G. Greer’s death, newly released body camera video sheds light on the circumstances around Greer’s death. We want to warn you that the video may be difficult to watch.

It all started two weeks ago, on Dec. 11. Around 10 p.m., Portland police responded to a stabbing call outside of a Plaid Pantry off of North Going Street.

The stabbing victim was taken to the hospital and survived.

Just two blocks away from the scene, a spokesperson for the Portland Police Bureau said a safety support specialist spotted a man on the ground, then did a welfare check and called for police officers.

Four arrived. An officer then called for non-emergency help.

After the call, officers figured out the man was the stabbing suspect.

They then handcuffed him while he was lying face down on the ground.

Minutes later, officers surmised that Greer lost consciousness. They called for emergency help.

The next day, Portland police said a postmortem exam of Greer showed "no indicators that his death was caused by an outside trauma."
