George Washington and the Marquis de Lafayette, a French aristocrat and military officer, had a strong bond and friendship. Lafayette was a staunch opponent of slavery and believed in the principles of liberty and equality. He visited Washington at his Mount Vernon estate and met with him on several occasions.
