On March 27, 1999, a U.S. Air Force pilot from the 49th Fighter Wing was flying an F-117A Nighthawk on a bombing mission over Serbia during Operation Allied Force. The objective was to target a command center near Belgrade. Flying without support aircraft, the pilot relied entirely on the stealth technology of the Nighthawk. Meanwhile, a Serbian SAM unit, led by a determined commander and operating an older Soviet-made S-125 Neva missile system, lay in wait below.
