Today's comparison of the Upper Room Discourse with the Greatest Locker Room Speech of All Time comes from John 15:9-17.
Love for the coach and for the team and the results of that are the focus of today's passage. Jesus talks about "abiding" in His love and His commandments. Abide is the word translated from a Greek word that occurs 120 times in the New Testament. It is often translated as abide, like in this chapter. We find it ten times in the chapter that is often referred to as the "abide chapter". It also is translated as "remain" as we find it in verse 16 of today's passage.
Love and commitment can almost be used interchangeably in this chapter. The words that Jesus shares with His Apostles in this chapter and particularly this section of the chapter are meant to be encouragement to them and show His faith in them maintaining His plan and purpose for them and the Kingdom.
The coach will use similar words and thoughts to encourage his team that he has personally chosen them to be on his team and is confident the they will accomplish the team's goal and purpose.
