On Monday, 25 December 800 AD—1,224 years ago today—Charlemagne was crowned Holy Roman Emperor by Pope Leo III in Old Saint Peter’s Basilica, Rome, on Christmas Day. What meaning, if any, does this event have for us today, more than a millennium later?
