The remarkable features of Australian History could be
charted from the beginning of European settlement, thou many came to this continent way before that. Such as Dirk Van Harthog, a Dutch sailor, who named it New Holland in 1616. Then Abel tasman, who came apon Tasmania in
1642 and named it Van Diemen’s Land, this was in honour of the governor of Batavia. In the 1680s, William Dampier
landed on the north coast, then set sailed and returned in 1699 and documented the North Coast of new Guinea.
Then in 1770, Captain James Cook discovered the eastern side of New Holland and named it New South Wales. This opened the way for England to send out the First Fleet in 1787. This was due to the Botanist Joseph banks who in 1771 returned with James Cook, showed his artfacts gathered on their voyages. One that stood out was a Hemp plant picked up in New Zealand, called New Zealand Flax, the best flax in the world at that time, as at that time in history Hemp was commodity.
