Suspect Charged with Murder, Arson for Setting Woman on Fire and Killing Her on a NYC Subway Car

The suspect, identified as 33-year-old Sebastian Zapeta, a Guatemalan citizen, was captured on surveillance video approaching a woman who appeared to be sleeping on a stationary F train. Zapeta reportedly used a lighter to ignite her clothing, which was quickly engulfed in flames. Witnesses said the blaze consumed her within seconds. Despite efforts by emergency responders, the woman was pronounced dead on the scene. Her identity has not yet been released.

Zapeta’s actions were described as chilling. After setting the woman ablaze, he reportedly remained at the station, watching from a nearby bench as the fire consumed her.

Zapeta was arrested hours later after being recognized by high school students who had seen his image in a police alert. He was taken into custody on another subway line. Officers found a lighter in his possession at the time of his arrest.
