Existential Christmas FilmFest | Book of Life (1998) | Do You Believe You Have A Soul?

I wanted to talk about the connection between Spiritual & Physical reality after watching a short film that has Christmas & New Years themes.

The end of the millennium has taken on a certain significance in modern day prophecies. What happens if Jesus Christ has second thoughts about the Apocalypse? It is December 31, 1999 and New Year's Eve takes on new meaning when the Devil, Jesus Christ, and Christ's assistant Magdalena discuss and debate the end of the world, the opening of the seven seals, and the essence of being human.

I really find this film fascinating for the way it discusses the connection between ‘belief’ or ‘spiritual manifestation’, particularly with one subplot that I’ll speak about at length…there is a rigid atheist who is confronted with his lack of belief by a man claiming to be “The Devil”…the atheist thinks this is completely foolish until the stranger calling himself The Devil proposes…’If a human soul doesn’t exist…and you don’t believe in the concept of a soul, then certainly you wouldn’t mind trading your girlfriend’s soul in exchange for success”

Now this rigid atheist is actually ‘thinking’…”Am I an atheist?”

No matter what you think of God, believer or non-believer…I think this film has something for nearly everyone. It’s one of my favorite films to share with people around the holidays. It’s not depressing. It’s intellectually stimulating & will leave you with something to think about without draining you emotionally.
