In 2024, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission introduced new regulations on mountain lion hunting and trapping, effective September 1, marking the first major updates in over 50 years. Key changes include:

A statewide ban on "canned hunting," which involves capturing and releasing mountain lions for hunting.
New trapping standards requiring that live mountain lions not be held in traps or snares for more than 36 hours, with specific exemptions for certain snare setups.
These rules aim to promote ethical practices while balancing landowner needs and wildlife conservation. Violations are classified as Class C misdemeanors with fines up to $500.
