U.S. Navy pilots were shot down over the Red Sea in a "friendly fire" incident, marking the first time a crewed U.S. aircraft was downed during anti-Houthi operations.

The U.S. Navy inadvertently shot down its own F/A-18 fighter jet, which had taken off from the USS Harry S. Truman aircraft carrier. The guided-missile cruiser USS Gettysburg accidentally fired on the jet. The Pentagon confirmed the shootdown in a press release on Sunday.

Both pilots survived the incident, though one sustained injuries. The mistake highlights the dangers in ongoing U.S. operations in the region.
